98: Be an AACtivist: How to Promote Cultural Diversity in AAC Assessment & Treatment

Listen to the podcast here

On this episode I am joined by Cara Walton, a certified speech-language pathologist who specializes in the areas of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and autism. Cara is the author of a recent change.org petition titled “Demands for ASHA to Increase Cultural Sensitivity” that received over 15,000 signatures in just 21 days! She has become a pioneer in helping underrepresented SLPs and graduate students in the field feel heard, experience change, and receive cultural education starting in graduate school.

Topics/Questions:

  1. What are some considerations SLPs need to keep in mind when conducting AAC assessments, specifically in regards to cultural diversity?

  2. What cultural differences should SLPs keep in mind when working with children who use AAC (e.g. familial considerations)?

  3. How can SLPs better promote anti-racism and diversity in the field of AAC?

  4. What are some current biases that are being perpetuated in the field of AAC?

  5. You’re passionate about AAC and literacy! How can SLPs support diverse literacy instruction with AAC users? (e.g. using culturally diverse books)
