52: The One About Preventing Burnout with Kirsten Kelly

Listen to the podcast here.

Introduction:

This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Kirsten Kelly from It’s a Speech Thing. Kirsten is an SLP and TPT author and also blogger along with Taryn. She also bakes, naps, procrastinates, and enjoys teaching language through play. Today we discuss Kirsten’s most popular resources, her tips for avoiding burnout, and how to maintain a healthy working relationship with others.

In her work with children, Kristen embraces the belief that “play is the highest form of research,” and her most popular resources are large core boards and interactive books. She also offers some no-print, no-prep products.

Kirsten also shares about her own struggle withburnout, especially the emotional toll her work was taking on her mentalhealth, and how she’s learning to protect and care for herself. The healthyrelationship she maintains with Taryn, her business partner is part of thatself-care. We dive into what their friendship and business partnership lookslike.

Finally, Kirsten shares her three favorite baking recipes. (Are you a procrastibaker too?) You don’t want to miss those!

Topics/Questions:

  1. You create resources that are functional and geared towards play. Can you tell me about your most popular resources?
  2. Back in March, you posted that a “Mental Health Day is Equal to a Sick Day” and shared about feeling burn out. Can you shared why you posted that and your tips for SLPs feeling burn out?
  3. What are the pros and cons of working together? What are your tips for successful collaboration?
  4. Do you both live in the same city? What is it like running a business with someone long distance?

Game: Share your top 3favorite recipes

You’ll have to tune into the episode to findout her answers!
