Dining at a restaurant can be challenging for many students. These community outings are a common life event, but can result in stress behaviors and dysregulation if children are not prepared for the sensory stimuli and social expectations.

Loud noises, long periods of waiting for a table and food, possibly aversive foods, and change in dining routine - these experiences can make children feel anxious, overstimulated, scared, and impatient. But we know from research that preparing children for novel events often leads to more positive outcomes.

As an educator, you want to teach your students practical skills that they can use in the real world. As an SLP myself, I frequently use social stories and visual schedules to help children transition and prepare for a variety of scenarios. That is why I created this resource to help children prepare for one of the most common real-world events that often gets overlooked.
