68: The One About Keeping Kids Motivated
Listen to the podcast here.
In this episode I am joined by my previous business partner and co-host, Kimberly Tice!
Kim used to be my CF supervisor and has over 10 years experience working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a certified special education teacher and speech-language pathologist in both New York and Florida. She has experience in providing individual and group interventions in the areas of literacy, social skills, feeding, and language in a variety of settings. In 2013, Kim opened a private practice to focus on providing social language skills intervention to children with ASD. Re-directing her efforts to being the ultimate speechie mom, she currently holds a part-time position at a charter school that primarily serves students ages 5-18 with ASD. Aside from her professional background, Kim enjoys running marathons and spending time with her family.
Topics/Questions:
- Some children exhibit clear interests which makes it easy to get them engaged and stay on task, but what are your tips for finding what motivates children who do not display any strong interests?
- In previous settings, I used to plan a lot for sessions. In the school, I would do weekly themes around a book and fun crafts. In private therapy, I bought any toy, game, or resource I thought I needed to keep the children engaged. Honestly it got very expensive and exhausting because kids interests change. What they liked to play with last week might not have as much appeal this week. Now this time around, I am taking a more functional approach. Meaning I am not bringing toys to the child’s home. I am just following their lead. I am also not sure I will prep weekly activities for my new role in the schools. But I kind of feel like a bad therapist, like I should be prepping more. What are your thoughts?
- Can you share about a child or children you have worked with in the past who didn’t have clear interests and how you got them motivated?
