41: The One About Selective Mutism with Mia McDaniel

Listen to the podcast here

Introduction:

Do you have any students with selective mutism on your caseload? If so, it's a good chance that you are their only service provider. You may already know that that selective mutism is often due to a psychological issue such as anxiety disorder, shyness, or fear of embarrassment, and the SLP should not be the only provider.

It can be so challenging to know where to start with these students and who should be part of the interdisciplinary team. Even when you do have other professionals on the team, you might find the student will speak with some individuals but not you.

Thankfully, Mia McDaniel from Putting Words in Your Mouth joins the podcast this week to explain how to get started and feel confident when working with individuals with selective mutism. That way you can avoid feeling overwhelmed, and limit your risk for increasing the student's anxiety related to speaking.

Tune into this week's episode for all her tips and tricks and join us for an Instagram live later this week! Mia is ready to answer your questions and help you start feeling more confident and prepared when it comes to working with students with selective mutism!
